WASHINGTON — Four days after it launched, the popular cash-for-clunkers program has burned through its $950-million budget, sending the Obama administration scrambling to find additional money tonight and avoid a shutdown of the program.

And this from Politico:

The Obama administration is telling lawmakers that just a week after it took effect, its $1 billion “cash-for-clunkers” program is already running out of money and will be suspended Thursday night, according to three Senate aides familiar with the discussions.

…and finally this from the New York Times:

White House Says ‘Clunkers’ Rebate Plan Will Go On

The White House said Friday that the “cash for clunkers”

program was still alive even though the $1 billion that Congress had appropriated for it has already been snapped up.

…and finally, for the end of the day news on this issue:

The House has passed a $2 billion spending bill to save the “cash for clunkers” program, on a 316-109 vote.
